Does the name Jochen Hippel mean anything to you? Maybe not, but this German musician is the name behind several of the Thalion game tunes. Now you can listen to Jochen on your CD player thanks to his latest release - give it a try. Featuring soundtracks from the likes of "Wings of Death" and "Dragonflight", the CD also includes new pieces of Jochen's work. The highlight of the CD is perhaps Jochen's collaboration with programmer Michael Bittner - the "Bittner Rap" is like no other rap you've heard before.

No it's not actually a game, it is in fact a compilation CD of Thalion's best arcade tunes. Who could forget the classic "Wings of Death (Main Theme)", "Dragonflight Part I - Dawn at Ontaflareth" and "Wings of Death (Second Theme)"? They're all here and should be doing the rounds at a software store near you. Just think of it as CDTV entertainment without the TV.

Game music comes to CD

The Japanese have been raving about computer game theme tunes for ages. It's nothing new for them to go into a club and listen to the dubious techie tattle of video games, or to settle down by the Sony and relax to the harmonious echo of perishing aliens.

In Europe we've been far too sensible - until now. UK distributor Extendor has just begun selling a CD packed with the sounds of various Thalion games. Programmed by Jochen Hippel, the CD features bellowings from such classics as "Wings of Death" and "Dragonflight". Extendor claims that the CD has already sold 2,000 copies in Germany, and is still going strong. Jochen Hippel's "Give it a try" costs £6.99.

Jochen Hippel, der Musikexperte der deutschen Softwarefirma Thalion, durfte sich in einem professionellen Tonstudio austoben. Hier peppte er seine Titelstücke zu ST-Spielen wie "Wings of Death" mit Keyboard, Gitarre und Schlagzeug tüchtig auf und fügte ein paar neue Kompositionen hinzu. Klänge digitaler Art konnten die Besucher [der ST-News International Christmas Coding Convention 1990] nicht nur in Form von zahlreichen Demos genießen. Thalion Software produzierte eine CD mit Jochen Hippel, der bereits mehrere Male für guten Sound in Spielen wie "Wings of Death" oder "Dragonflight" sorgte. Il ne s'agit pas d'une démo, mais d'un CD! Les fans de Jochen Hippel, et ils sont nombreux, vont pouvoir se régaler avec le premier disque du musicien Allemand, digne successeur de Rob Hubbard. Sorti à la STNICCC, nous avions omis de le signaler le mois dernier. Cet album comporte quelques-uns de ses meilleurs morceaux ("Dragonflight", "Wings of Death", etc.) entièrement réorchestrés avec un vrai synthétiseur.
